Smith, Lucas Named WBCA All-Americans

Smith Selected to 10-Member All-America Team, Lucas an Honorable-Mention Honoree

Senior April Smith was named to the 10-member WBCA All-America Team after averaging 21.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per contest.
ATLANTA, GA. – William Paterson senior forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) was named to the 10-member Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III All-America Team, while classmate BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) was an honorable-mention all-America honoree, the group announced March 16.

The D3hoops.com Atlantic Region and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Year and a first-team D3hoops.com all-region and all-conference selection, Smith was named an honorable-mention selection to the D3hoops.com and D3 News Preseason All-America Teams.  She averaged 21.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per contest and scored in double figures in all but one game (18 20+, two 30+) reaching double figures in rebounding 24 times.  Smith led Division III with 23 double-doubles.   Smith finished her career with 1,648 points (fourth at WP) and 985 rebounds in three full seasons at WP.   In the NJAC stats, she ranked first in rebounding (16th nationally), offensive rebounds (5.0 rpg) and defensive rebounds (7.2 rpg), second in scoring (eighth in Division III) and field-goal percentage (.587, fourth nationally), fourth in blocks and sixth in free-throw percentage (.773).  She was selected to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week (Jan. 19), was named the Jan. 3 and Feb. 15 ECAC Metro Player of the Week, and was a six-time NJAC Player of the Week (Nov. 21, Jan. 2, Jan. 16, Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27).  Smith's impressive resume also included being an honorable-mention 2011 WBCA all-American, and a two-time second-team all-region and three-time first-team all-NJAC selection.

The NJAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team D3hoops.com all-region and all-NJAC selection, Lucas was named to the D3hoops.com and D3 News Preseason All-America Teams.  She is the WP career steals leader (308) and was second at WP in scoring (1,702).  This year, the guard averaged 14.0 points (eighth in NJAC) and 3.2 assists (seventh) per contest, accumulating 21 double-digit scoring games (six 20+).  In the NJAC statistics, Lucas rated first in free-throw percentage (.867, school record, 16th in Division III), second in assist/turnover ratio (1.4) and fifth in steals (2.7 spg).  She was selected as the Jan. 9 ECAC Metro ad NJAC Player of the Week.  A member of the Emmanuel College Invitational (Nov. 19-20) and Coaches vs. Cancer (Dec. 29-30) All-Tournament Teams, Lucas was named to the 2011 WBCA All-America Team and the D3hoops.com All-America Third Team.  Lucas is a four-time all-conference honoree, and 2011 ECAC Metro Player of the Year and NJAC Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Year, and also a two-time all-region selection and the 2009 NJAC and ECAC Metro Region Rookie of the Year.

William Paterson finished the season 26-3 overall and 12-1 in league play, winning the NJAC Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round.
