Name, Image and Likeness

Name, Image and Likeness are three elements that make up a legal concept known as the “right of publicity.” NIL refers to an individual’s ability to capitalize on their right of publicity and to be compensated through third-party endorsements. Student-athletes may now earn cash, gifts-in-kind, promotional discounts, equity shares, reduced costs of services or any other form of legitimate payment for work performed.

NCAA college student-athletes may monetize their name, image and likeness (NIL), but NIL must not be used as a recruiting inducement, may not be used to provide extra benefits, and compensation may not based on athletic achievement (I.e. pay for play).

William Paterson University's student-athletes are subject to the provisions of the New Jersey Fair Play Act.
