Taboadela Breaks Own WP Record in 100 IM, Men’s Swimming and Diving Upends Bard, 105-87

Pioneers Improve to 11-1 on the Season, Taboadela Swims 55.13 in 100 IM

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.  – Senior Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) won two events, breaking his own school record in the 100 IM, junior diver William Barrett (Pompton Lakes, N.J. /Pompton Lakes ) added two more victories and the William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (11-1) downed the Bard Raptors (0-7) on the road, 105-87, Jan. 20.

The win gives the Pioneers their sixth straight victory and also the program's best record through 12 meets since going 11-1 through 12 contests in the 2014-15 season.

Six individual victories and one relay win were behind WP's success against the Raptors. Taboadela won the 100 IM (55.13), breaking his own school record in that event (56.00) set in 2014-15. He also brought home the 100 back (55.42) and nearly won three events on the afternoon after being edged in the 100 breast (1:02.23) by Bard's freshman Hunter Davenport at a margin of just .07 second. The Rockaway, N.J., native was on a staggering streak of 33 consecutive individual events won prior to placing second in the 100 breast.

Joining Taboadela as a double winner was Barrett, who posted meet-high scores in both the one-meter (161.40) and three-meter (181.75) dives.

Two single winners bolstered the Pioneers' final score in senior Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) and junior Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham). Melendez's triumph came in the 200 free (1:55.25), winning by over seven seconds, and Macchia's nine points came in the 100 free (51.41). Pioneer sophomore Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) was just .35 second behind Macchia in the 100 free as the pair of sprinters continued their neck-and-neck competition throughout the season.

WP closed out its 11th win of the season by cruising to first place in the 200 free relay (1:41.44) thanks to Logue, sophomore Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West), Melendez and Macchia.

Division II Queens (0-3-1) comes to Wayne, N.J., Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 6:00 p.m. for the Pioneers second-to-last home meet of the season.
