WAYNE, N.J. – Five swimmers contributed at least one win as the William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (5-0) defeated Staten Island (1-3) 117-81 Nov. 7, giving the Pioneers a five-meet winning streak to start the 2017-18 season, matching last year's mark to start the year.
Senior
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) led the way for WP once again, notching his fifth-consecutive meet with three wins, posting victories in the 200 free (1:54.36), 100 fly (54.87) and 100 back (56.17). The Rockaway, N.J. native won each race by at least five seconds, providing 27 points for WP.
Sophomore
Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) continued to provide a lift in the distance events for WP, posting a personal best and first-place finish in the 11:27.78, while also winning the 500 free (5:33.50).
Three more swimmers posted single wins Tuesday, rounding out the Pioneers' fifth win on the year and third victory at Wightman Pool in as many meets. Junior
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) touch first in the 50 free (23.56), sophomore
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) edged all competitors in the 100 free (52.39) and senior
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) swam the fastest time in the 200 IM (2:09.52).
The teammate-rivalry between Macchia and Logue continued against CSI, as Macchia narrowly bested Logue by .14 second in the 50 free and Logue topped his elder teammate in the 100 free by just .46 second.
Sharkey wasn't the only Pioneer to notch a personal-best time in the win, as freshman Honacy Beco earned second place in the 100 fly (59.87), posting his first such time under one minute in the 100 fly in his young career. Also earning points in the 100 free was sophomore
Terrence Hopkins (Landing, N.J./Roxbury), posting a personal best in the 100 free (55.15) as he placed third in the event. The sophomore also set a personal-best mark with a 1:09.69 in the 100 breast.
Beco and Hopkins were also members in WP's first-place time in the 200 medley relay (1:52.43), being joined by freshman
Thomas Haughey (Folsom, Pa. /Ridley) and junior
Ryan Achyuthuni (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South). WP rounded out its relay wins and the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay, as Logue, Sharkey, Melendez and Macchia raced to the wall first (1:38.68). Melendez posted the fastest split amongst the four Pioneers, swimming the third leg in 23.54.
The Pioneers will host No. 15/16 Rowan (2-1, 0-0 NJAC) to open New Jersey Athletic Conference competition this Friday, Nov. 10, at 5:00 p.m.
