WAYNE, N.J. – Senior
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) added another notch to his stellar career with the William Paterson men's swimming and diving (3-0) program, setting the new men's record for all-time points during a triple winning performance in WP's 123-89 victory against visiting Baruch (0-1) Oct. 24.
The new-record holder now has 627.75 total points, eclipsing Joe Gentile's (1982-86) previously held mark of 625.75 points. The Rockaway, N.J. native used his third-consecutive meet as a triple winner to establish record, prevailing in the 200 free (1:54.37), 100 fly (56.08) and 100 back (56.55).
Taboadela wasn't the only Pioneer a strong outing Tuesday, as junior
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), senior
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) and sophomore
Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) all won two events apiece. Macchia edged sophomore teammate
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) in the 50 free for a first place finish (23.28), beating Logue by .31 second. The two continued the neck-and-neck competition in the 100 free, although Macchia came out on top once again, finishing first in the 100 free (51.57) .45 second ahead of the sophomore.
Melendez racked up nine points by touching first in the 200 IM (2:09.44) and later in the meet swam to a first-place time in the 100 breast (1:06.43).
Sharkey added 18 individual points by winning the 1,000 free (11:41.50) and 500 free (5:41.29) behind a pair of strong showings. Freshman
Bradley Belina (Paramus, N.J. /Paramus) continued to be in the mix for WP, placing second behind Sharkey in both the 1,000 free (11:52.05) and 500 free (5:41.29).
The men swept the two diving events on the night, as junior
William Barrett (Pompton Lakes, N.J. /Pompton Lakes ) won the one-meter dive (157.20) and sophomore
Emmanuel Garcia (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) posted the best score in the three-meter dive (163.43). Garcia was just behind his teammate in the one-meter, posting a 154.55.
WP was victorious in the 200 free relay as well, claiming first and second place. Coming in first with a good time of 1:36.29 was Logue, Sharkey, Melendez and Macchia. Melendez posted the fastest split out of the quartet (23.66).
The Pioneers will be off until they travel to face Maritime Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 6:00 p.m. in hopes of maintaining their perfect record to start the 2017-18 campaign.
