WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored the accomplishments of its 60 senior student-athletes, as well as eight senior student athletic trainers, during its annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet held April 23 in the University Commons Ballroom.

Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) was named the recipient of the Roland Watts Award, given to a student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and effort in his or her sport. A four-year starter for the Pioneers, Miele is a three-time all-conference and two-time all-region selection, earning spots on the 2013 All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) First Team, 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East Region and ECAC All-Metro Second Teams, 2012 NFCA All-East Region First Team and All-NJAC Second Team, and 2011 All-NJAC Second Team. She ranks among the WP career leaders in triples (12, tied-fourth), hits (175, fifth) and RBI (93, tied-sixth), and currently leads the team this season with a .412 batting average, 42 hits, five triples, 23 RBI, 23 runs scored and .451 on-base percentage. A member of the Honors College, Miele was a 2012-13 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete, a selection to the 2011-12 NJAC All-Academic Team Honorable Mention and 2012-13 Academic All-NJAC Second Team, and a Fall 2010 and Spring 2013 Dean's List student as a biology major. Upon completion of her bachelor's degree next month, she will continue her studies at Rutgers in the physical therapy doctoral program.
Dr. Warren Sandmann, the William Paterson University Provost, was the recipient of the Director's Award, presented to a non-athlete for outstanding support of the intercollegiate athletics program at William Paterson. Sandmann's support has been instrumental to the Pioneers' achievements in the classroom, including his involvement in the creation of the Faculty Athletic Support Team (FAST) in the fall of 2013.
Additionally, more than half of the seniors were honored for their academic accomplishments, as 35 received the Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
