Box Score MADISON, N.J. – Eighth-seeded William Paterson (8-8-3) moved on to the ECAC Metro Region Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal round, advancing past top-seeded Drew (11-4-5), 3-1 during the penalty-kick shootout following a 2-2 double-overtime result Nov. 13.
The Pioneers will face fourth-seeded Sage (11-4-4), a 3-1 winner against fifth-seeded Hobart (11-8-1), in the semifinals Saturday, Nov. 16, at a time and site to be determined. The highest remaining seed will host the semis as well as the final, to be played Sunday, Nov. 17. Second-seeded Richard Stockton hosts seventh-seeded Brooklyn tonight at 8:00 p.m., and No. 3 FDU-Florham hosts No. 6 Purchase at 7:00 p.m.
William Paterson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead less than 26 minutes into the contest. First-team all-conference senior midfielder
Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) sent a pass to the top of the box for senior forward
Hugh Riley (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional), who scored his seventh goal of the season at the 13:01 mark. Nigro had his second assist of the night just 13 minutes later, delivering the ball to junior midfielder
Rafael Marques (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) at the left corner of the box, and he knocked it home for his first career score.
The Rangers struck twice during the second half to level the match. Sebastien Etta Ashu collected a long ball over the top and poked it home in the 54th minute, and RJ Voorman scored the equalizer at the 62:26 mark when Etta Ashu left a ball for Ricardo Castro, who one-timed it to Voorman on the back post.
Drew opened the shootout with a miss by Castro. Marques put the Pioneers on the board, and WP freshman goalkeeper
Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) followed with a save of Tommy Tolve's attempt. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Year, junior back
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) made it a 2-0 William Paterson advantage, and the Rangers again failed to find the back of the net when Diacheysn stopped Voorman cold. Sophomore
Jose Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) missed and Matthew Gragnano finally got Drew on the board with his kick for a 2-1 score in the middle of the fourth round, but Neal finished things off with his successful effort for the Pioneers.
Diacheysn made 11 saves for WP, and was helped by a team save during the first overtime period. Michael Reyes had seven stops for Drew.
