Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (7-7-2, 2-5-1 NJAC) rallied from a two-goal deficit to square the match, but host Rutgers-Newark (14-4-1, 5-2-1 NJAC) came up with the game winner for a 3-2 result Oct. 26.
WP has one league match remaining, a home Senior Night title against Kean (0-7-1 NJAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers need a victory against the Cougars, and a Rowan (3-5 NJAC) tie or loss against The College of New Jersey (5-2-1 NJAC) Oct. 30, in order to qualify for the six-team New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament that begins Saturday, Nov. 2.
Senior midfielder Brian Barrera assisted on Raphael Araujo's first two goals for the Scarlet Raiders. He sent a crossing pass into the right side of the box where Araujo hammered the ice breaker into the right side of the net 12:46 into the fray. In the 20th minute, Barrera sent a long through ball from beyond midfield to Araujo, who sprinted past a Pioneer defender on the left side. The defender fell while trying to gain position, and Araujo charged ahead and pushed a shot past diving WP freshman goalkeeper
Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) to make it 2-0.
But the Pioneers answered by picking up the attack. Sophomore Matt Broomall had to stop a header by junior midfielder
Omar Jallow (Union City, N.J./Union City) and quality chances by senior midfielder
Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) and sophomore midfielder
Sean Neal (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) before WP finally broke through in the 36th minute.
Sophomore
Jose Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) rifled a hard shot off of Broomall in front of the left side of the net from point-blank range and junior back
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) put back the rebound over the fallen keeper to make it 2-1.
Just 71 seconds later, Nigro one-timed a cross from the left side by Hackett, scoring from the middle of the 18 to inside the left post and leveling the match.
Araujo tallied the game winner in the 40th minute when he took a lead cross inside the right side of the 18 from freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi and ripped a shot to the opposite side of the goal.
Diacheysn made four saves for the Pioneers and Broomall had eight stops for the Scarlet Raiders.
