BOX SCORE
WAYNE, N.J. – Four second-half goals allowed William Paterson (6-0-1, 1-0 NJAC) to cruise past New Jersey City (2-3-1, 0-1 NJAC) for a 5-0 victory in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer opener for both teams Sept. 17 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Pioneers had the majority of the play during the opening period, out-shooting the Gothic Knights, 8-2. That pressure paid off in the 18th minute when freshman
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) headed a
Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) corner toward the mouth of the goal and junior
Andrew Tauriello (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) cleaned up the loose ball on the line for his second career score. Senior
Anthony Ferrer (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) nearly added to that total late in the half, just missing each post with hard-driven shots, but William Paterson had to settle for the one-goal advantage at halftime.
Hackett was taken down in the box in the 55th minute and the Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Manny Lojo stopped Hackett's low attempt, but the Gothic Knights were whistled for a violation. On the re-try, Ferrer stepped to the spot and was successful, firing to the right side for a 2-0 lead.
Senior
Jake Weinberg's (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) long cross found Hackett on the left wing, and after a few cutbacks the freshman beat Lojo to the near side, tucking the ball inside the left post in the 66th minute. Ferrer netted his second goal of the day just 12 minutes later, thanks to a
Kevin Bzdek (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) corner kick to the far post that senior
Joe Maddolin (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) headed back to the middle of the box. Ferrer's header finish was his seventh goal of the season.
Senior
Domenick Candelieri (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) finished the scoring in the 83rd minute, cleaning up the deflection of junior
Michael Encarnacion's (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) shot.
Senior goalkeeper
Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) made one save for William Paterson, and Lojo had five stops for NJCU. The Pioneers finished with a 20-6 shot advantage.
William Paterson will visit Farmingdale State Monday, Sept. 19, at 4:00 p.m.
