WAYNE, N.J. – Four different Pioneers scored while enjoying a man advantage as William Paterson (8-1-2, 3-0-1 NJAC) pulled away from Montclair State (8-2-2, 4-1 NJAC) for a 4-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer victory Oct. 7 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

MSU's Mike Pytlar caught WP keeper Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) off his line and scored to the empty net, breaking the 0-0 deadlock 1:42 into the second period. However, less than two minutes later, Pytlar was issued a red card for a play that occurred along the sideline, forcing the Red Hawks to play a man down.

William Paterson took advantage almost immediately, and the reinvigorated offensive attack was rewarded in the 54th minute after a MSU foul just outside the right side of the box. Freshman Mike Lowe (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. duPont) drilled the free kick to the middle of the six, and classmate Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) headed it in for the equalizer.

Sophomore Michael Encarnacion's (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) perfect through ball was run on to by senior Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who launched it to the far post and scored his second goal in as many matches, making it a 2-1 contest in the 72nd minute.

Eight minutes later, senior Ryan Miller (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) had an open goal but hit his shot off the left post. Senior Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) cleaned up the loose ball and buried it into the back of the net for a 3-1 Pioneer advantage. Encarnacion later got on the scoreboard himself during the 81st minute of play, knocking in his own rebound off Montclair State goalkeeper Anthony Rogic.

The Red Hawks were forced to play 9 v. 11 for the final 4:15 of the match after Larry Geraghty was shown a red card, the eighth card combined for the two teams (six for MSU).

William Paterson had the first quality opportunity of the match when Lowe was just wide of the right post off a Pipitone cross 11 minutes into the contest. Montclair State had four near misses during the opening half of play, the best one a Pytlar shot that was chested out by senior back Matthew Heitmann (Westwood, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) at the right post.

Collins finished with four saves for the Pioneers, and Rogic had six for the Red Hawks.

The Pioneers will visit Rowan Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 p.m.
