EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey (22-4, 11-2 NJAC) used a 21-2 first-half run to pull away from visiting William Paterson (19-8, 10-3 NJAC) for a 67-47 victory in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Women's Basketball Tournament Feb. 25.
After junior
Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) drilled a three-pointer for the game's first points, the Lions scored 11 straight tallies, eventually building a 21-5 lead with 7:31 to play in the first half and a 27-13 advantage at the break. The Pioneers twice got to within 12 points during the first seven minutes of the second period, but TCNJ's 52.0 (13-25) percent shooting during the final 20 minutes ended William Paterson's comeback hopes.
Haledjian scored a team-high 16 points while adding seven steals. Sophomore forward
April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) had 12 points with a team-high nine rebounds for the Pioneers, the North Division's second seed in the tournament.
South Division top-seeded TCNJ was led by senior center Hillary Klimowicz, as she collected her 11th double-double of the year and 41st of her career. Named the NJAC's Women's Basketball Player of the Year earlier in the day, she netted 19 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Sophomore forward Kelsey Kutch netted 10 points with 11 rebounds, and junior Alexandra Gregorek hauled in 10 rebounds for the Lions on the night with six points and five steals.
