JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Six different Pioneers reached double figures in scoring as the William Paterson women's basketball team (10-4, 2-0 NJAC) rolled to a 93-51 victory at New Jersey City (3-8, 1-2 NJAC) Jan. 7.
The score marked the most points scored and the largest margin of victory for the Pioneers since a 96-52 win against New York City Tech on Nov. 21, 2006. The victory also was the 13th straight for William Paterson against the Gothic Knights.
Junior guard
Jillian Kane (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) led the Pioneers with 17 points, adding five rebounds, while classmate
Erin Cook (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) posted 16 tallies and six boards. Sophomore forward
April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) had 13 points and six rebounds, junior guard
Julie Haledjian (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) contributed 12 points and seven assists, and junior forward
Deidra Thompson (Prospect Park, N.J./Paterson Eastside) added 11 tallies. Sophomore forward
Absatu Mustapha (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) chipped in 10 points, and freshman guard
BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) had game highs of nine assists and five steals. In all, nine of the 11 Pioneers got into the scoring column.
William Paterson jumped out to a 58-20 halftime lead behind 21-for-38 (.553) shooting. The Pioneers led by as many as 50 midway through the second half (79-29, 9:36), and finished the contest shooting 52.2 (35-67) percent from the floor, 56.3 (9-16) percent from three-point range and 1.000 (14-14) from the free-throw line.
Lashawn Overton led NJCU with 26 points, while Ebony Cunningham had seven tallies and 10 rebounds.
William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Jan. 10, at Richard Stockton at 2:00 p.m.
