Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J. – Two of the top teams in the nation opened their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer schedule Sept. 20 with a tie as No. 12 Rutgers-Camden (7-0-1, 0-0-1 NJAC) and No. 21 William Paterson (5-0-2, 0-0-1 NJAC) played to a 1-1 double-overtime deadlock at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.

In a battle fitting two heavyweights, both teams had moments of offensive promise and anxious moments on defense in a game that William Paterson held a 20-16 advantage in shots and Rutgers-Camden had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Pioneers put 14 shots on goal, forcing Rutgers-Camden freshman keeper Tim VanLiew to make 13 saves, including a few outstanding ones. William Paterson junior goalie Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick), meanwhile, had six saves, including one late in the first half when he saved a shot by Raptor sophomore midfielder Shane McGrory and saw the deflection glance off the left post. Peragallo then recovered to save the follow-up shot by sophomore midfielder Matt Gomez.

The only scoring in the game came in the first half, with the Pioneers jumping on the scoreboard at 32:20 on a goal by junior midfielder Helder Andrade (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.). Sophomore forward Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) took a shot from the left side of the box and Andrade, perched near the goal mouth, deflected the ball past VanLiew to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal the Raptors allowed in five games, a span of 415:35, dating back to a 3-2 win over Philadelphia Biblical University Sept. 3.

Rutgers-Camden tied the game 10 minutes later on a goal by freshman forward Todd Kleinstuber, whose fourth goal of the year tied him for the team lead. The play started with a long restart from near midfield by junior back Chase Komer that found Gomez in the box. Gomez worked the ball to the right side, where Kleinstuber banged in a tough-angle shot from down near the goal line.

William Paterson outshot Rutgers-Camden, 11-6, in the second half and 2-0 in the first overtime. The Scarlet Raptors held a slim 2-1 edge in shots in the final overtime period.

William Paterson will host Ramapo College Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
