Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – Three second-half strikes allowed the No. 11 William Paterson men's soccer team (13-4-2) to pull away and advance to the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament after soundly defeating The College of New Jersey (9-9-2), 5-1, in the first round Nov. 1 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
In the process, sophomore
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) became William Paterson's single-season assists leader (16), collecting a pair against the Lions. The fourth-seeded Pioneers will next play at top-seeded and third-ranked Montclair State Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. Earlier this year, the Red Hawks won 1-0 in overtime against the Pioneers in Wayne.
Sophomore
Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) put William Paterson on top in the 11th minute, when a
Bryan Manfria (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) cross caused TCNJ keeper Eric Goldwaser to come off his line and he collided with one of the Lions' backs. Pipitone knocked the loose ball home, his 12th score of the year.
That lead, however, was short lived, as TCNJ answered 73 seconds later when junior Anthony Staropoli connected on a Kevin Luber free kick, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute.
William Paterson regained the advantage during the 19th minute, when Valerio dropped a pass off to junior
Jonathan Donado (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), who blasted a ball that hit the left post and spun into the goal. It was the third score of the year for Donado, and the league-leading 15th assist of the season for Valerio.
That score held until 14 minutes into the second half, when freshman
Hussein Jaafar (North Bergen, N.J./Cliffside Park) raced up the middle of the field on a breakaway and touched the ball left to sophomore
Chris Belan (Howell, N.J./Freehold Twp.). Belan cut it back and fired the ball past Goldwaser, giving William Paterson some breathing room at 3-1.
Valerio sent Pipitone with a long pass for a breakaway, and the sophomore forward connected again for his second goal of the night and a 4-1 score with 22:31 to play. The assist, Valerio's 16th of the year, broke the previous William Paterson single-season record of 15 (Joseph Felice, 1977).
Junior
Helder Andrade (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.) finished the scoring five minutes later, knocking in a
Ryan Miller (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) deflection.
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) had eight saves for William Paterson, while Goldwaser did not make a stop for TCNJ before being lifted in the 60th minute.
