WAYNE , N.J. – Three first-half goals helped the William Paterson men's soccer team (5-1) overcome FDU-Florham (2-2), 4-2, Sept. 12 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Freshman Jerry Mecca (Ridgefield, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored his first career goal in the 15th minute when a cross from outside-right deflected off a defender and past the Devils' goalkeeper. Freshman defender Gary Barrell (Kent, England/The Towers School) notched his first career goal in the 22nd minute off a deflected shot by freshman Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central).

The Pioneers extended their lead with five minutes left in the first half when a foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick, giving freshman midfielder Dan Fulmer (Andover, N.J./Newton) his first collegiate goal.
William Paterson captured a 4-0 lead with 16 minutes left in the game when freshman forward Danny Kusnic (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) buried a shot from Barrell.

The Devils retaliated with 14 minutes left in the game after a penalty kick, taken by sophomore forward Alex Malcolm, put them on the scoreboard. Malcolm notched another goal in the 85th minute with a blast to the upper-left corner, giving the final 4-2 score of the game.

Senior goalkeeper David Casper (Franklin, N.J./Timothy Christian) made two saves and freshman goalkeeper Alex Wanless (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) had one stop for the Pioneers.

“Our goal for today was to register a shutout,” said head coach Brian Woods. “While it is important for this team to accomplish goals, a win is always appreciated.”

The Pioneers will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference action this Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host New Jersey City at 1:00 p.m.
