EWING, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (7-7, 1-5 NJAC) twice battled back to erase a one-goal deficit, but No. 14 The College of New Jersey (9-2-3, 4-0-2 NJAC) eventually scored the game winner in the 71st minute for a 3-2 victory Oct. 10 in Ewing.
TCNJ's Kevin Luber scored just 1:09 into the match as he blasted a pass from senior Nima Rahimi past WP goalkeeper
David Casper (Franklin, N.J./Timothy Christian). However, that 1-0 lead did not last long as Pioneer freshman forward
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) tied the action off a misplayed ball by TCNJ's keeper, knotting the contest at the 4:42 mark.
Sophomore Anthony Staropoli broke the 1-1 tie at 46:59 on a feed from Luber to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Valerio again answered right back, scoring his second goal of the day and his fifth of the season at 57:50. Luber found the back of the net for the game winner at 70:18 with his second goal of the match, and ninth of the season, for the 3-2 TCNJ advantage.
Casper made eight saves for the Pioneers. William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Oct. 13, with a home match against Rutgers-Camden at 5:00 p.m.
