Men's Swimming and Diving Claims Home Victory over St. Joseph's (L.I.)

WAYNE, N.J. - The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (4-1) cruised to a dominant 191-51 triumph over visiting St. Joseph's University (L.I.) (1-3) on November 4.

TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Junior Justin Melli (Erma, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) posted first-place finishes in the 200 fly (2:17.26), 200 free (1:58.21), and 500 free (5:26.32).
  • Freshman Andre Miguel Ovejas (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) touched the wall first in the 1000 free (12:54.86).
  • Junior Zak Li (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) earned first-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:06.23), 200 breast (2:24.32), and 200 IM (2:13.91).
  • Senior Nicky Byrd (Purchase, N.Y./Harrison) was victorious in the 100 back (1:02.96) and 200 back (2:17.83).
  • Sophomore Mario Pontidis (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) finished first in the 50 free (23.41) and 100 free (52.57).
  • Sophomore Ismael Lamar (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) secured victory in the 100 fly (1:04.77).
  • The Pioneers placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:49.94), with efforts from Byrd, freshman Horain Reid (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central), Li, and Pontidis.
  • WP finished first in the 200 free relay (1:47.88), with efforts from Byrd, Pontidis, Lamar, and Reid.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Lamar shredded time off his 50 free best (25.21).
  • Li set a new personal best in the 200 IM (2:13.91).
  • Ovejas posted personal records in the 1000 free (12:54.86), 200 fly (2:33.91), and 100 fly (1:05.90).
  • Reid improved his 100 breast best (1:15.41).
