Men's Swimming and Diving Defeat Maritime in the Last Leg

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (6-4) secured the win in the last relay against Maritime (0-1), at Wightman Pool on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Pioneers were three seconds behind going into the last leg of the 200 free relay, junior Andrew Colligan (Andover, N.J./Sussex County Tech) finished in 23.53 seconds to give William Paterson the lead. The Pioneers defeated the Privateers, 103-100.

TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Freshman Nicky Byrd (Purchase, N.Y./Harrison) was victorious in the 200 free (2:00.73) and 100 back (1:02.33).
  • Colligan secured first in the 50 free (24.02) and 100 free (53.97).
  • Junior Brandon Arias (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) earned a first-place finish in the 1,000 free (11:51.67).
  • Sophomore Shane Apito (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) earned a win in the 200 IM (2:13.75).
  • Junior Jackson Forrest (Lewes, Del./Wayne Valley) won the 1 mtr dive with a final score of 145.20.
  • The Pioneers defeated the Privateers in the 200 free relay to secure the win, with efforts by juniors Bruno Gavela (Wayne, N.J./Klein Collins), Anthony Newman (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany), Forrest and Colligan, finishing with a time of 1:42.61.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Apito finished with a personal best in the 200 IM (2:13.75) and 100 fly (58.45). He also cut over nine seconds off his personal best in the 500 free (5:19.81).
  • Arias' victory in the 1,000 free was a personal record (11:51.67). His third place finish in the 500 free earned him a personal best (5:48.85).
  • Newman earned a personal best in the 200 free (2:19.74).
  • Colligan secured a personal record in the 50 free (24.02).

  • William Paterson travels to Lehman on Tuesday, Jan. 10 for a 6:00 p.m. meet.
