Andes, Faulkner Lead 57 WP Selections to Academic All-NJAC Team

First-team selections (left to right) Nicole Andes and Charles Faulkner, along with second-team pick Christine Griffith and Bryan Kopko, led 57 Pioneers on the Academic All-NJAC Team.
PITMAN, N.J. – William Paterson field hockey senior midfielder Nicole Andes (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and football junior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) garnered spots on the 2017-18 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Academic First Team, leading a list of 57 WP honorees.

Junior volleyball/softball student-athlete Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and baseball senior pitcher Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) were second-team selections, while 53 other Pioneers received honorable-mention laurels.

Andes was the winner of WP's Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the graduating senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. A Dean's List student every semester at WP while starting 55 of 59 career games and scoring two goals, she was named to the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mentions. Andes was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete honor society, and was a member of the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squads. She graduated summa cum laude in January with a double major in psychology and criminology and criminal justice.

A second-team all-NJAC pick after the 2017 season and an honorable-mention all-league selection in 2016, Faulkner owns 251 total tackles (92 solo, 13.5 TFL, 2.0 sack) while forcing three fumbles during his three seasons on the gridiron. A psychology major, he was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, is a five-time Dean's List student (Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, Spring 2018) and was named to the 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mention.

A two-sport standout, Griffith has averaged 1.55 kills and 3.02 digs per set while competing in 80 career volleyball matches. On the softball diamond, she is a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association all-region (2018 second team, 2017 first team) and first-team all-NJAC (2017-18) honoree, hitting .388 (85-219) with 15 doubles, 15 triples, 10 home runs, 73 RBI and 56 runs scored in 96 games played over three seasons. Griffith was one of the 50 players named to the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year preseason watch list, and she was named to this season's Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team. Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, Griffith is a six-time Dean's List student (Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, Fall 2017, Spring 2018) and a member of the 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mention as a double major in philosophy and psychology.

Kopko made 57 of his 60 career appearances out of the bullpen, registering a 3.53 earned-run average, 7-9 record, nine saves and 43 strikeouts during 102.0 innings pitched. Named to the 2015 New Jersey Colligate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State Second Team and NJCBA All-State Rookie Team, he was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma and was a member of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mentions. Kopko was a Dean's List student five times (Fall 2015, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, Fall 2017, Spring 2018) and graduated magna cum laude in May with a bachelor's degree in finance.

To be eligible for the squad, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior who has competed in a conference-sponsored sport while achieving a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20. First and second-team selections were made by each of the league's 10 full-member institutions.
