WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored the accomplishments of its 39 senior student-athletes and 12 senior student athletic trainers, one of whom also is a student-athlete, at its annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet April 18 in the University Commons Ballroom.

In addition to celebrating each of the seniors, the Pioneers bestowed several individual awards during the event. Senior
Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) was named the recipient of the Roland Watts Memorial Award, given to a student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and effort in his or her sport. An all-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) honoree in two different sports for the Pioneers, the soccer back (2013-16) was a second-team all-league selection as a senior and an honorable-mention pick as a junior, collecting 11 goals during 73 career starts. On the basketball court (2015-18), the forward started in 76 of 80 career appearances over three seasons, averaging 9.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. A second-team all-NJAC pick in 2018 as well as a 2017 honorable-mention all-conference selection, Woetzel was named the 2018 ECAC Tournament Most Valuable Player while leading WP to the title.
Woetzel was recognized by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) as the winner of William Paterson's 2018 Outstanding Athlete Award. A six-time Dean's List student and a member of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mentions, Woetzel will graduate this May with a bachelor's degree in communication.
Field hockey midfielder
Nicole Andes (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) was named the winner of the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the graduating senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. A Dean's List student every semester at WP while starting 55 of 59 career games and scoring two goals, she was named to the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mentions. Andes was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete honor society, and was a member of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squads. She graduated summa cum laude in January with a double major in psychology and criminology and criminal justice.
William Paterson University President
Kathleen Waldron was presented the Director's Award, given to a non-athlete for outstanding service to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Waldron will be retiring this summer after eight years spent as WP's president, and during that time she has been an ardent supporter of Pioneer Athletics. A frequent and enthusiastic presence at William Paterson events, as well as a follower online when her schedule did not allow her attend in-person, her backing made possible a number of facility upgrades that will benefit Pioneer student-athletes for years to come.
In addition, 32 seniors were acknowledged as recipients of the Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Women's soccer head coach
Keith Woods was honored for recording his 200th career victory during a 3-0 shutout Sept. 20 against St. Joseph's-Long Island, and graduate assistants
Brock Borgeson (sports information),
Ben Chianchiano (athletic training) and
Sara Garner (athletic training) also were recognized for their contributions to the department.
