Sophomore Kyle Adams' 2OT Winner Lifts Pioneers Past Roadrunners, 4-3

MAHWAH, N.J. – Sophomore Kyle Adams (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) buried a goal just under four minutes into the second overtime period to help the William Paterson men's soccer team (8-2, 2-1 NJAC) overcome a two-goal deficit in the first half and defeat Ramapo (4-6, 1-2 NJAC) 4-3 on the road.

Adams beat Roadrunner keeper Ryan Sprague at the top of the box to give the Pioneers their second conference win of the season. It was the second goal of the day for the Bordentown native, with the first goal coming late in the first half to level the scoring before halftime. Junior Charlie Lizardo (Newark, N.J./East Side) netted his second goal of the season and sophomore Cameron Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./Saint John Vianney) also found the back of the net in the win.

The Roadrunners landed the opening punch on their home turf Wednesday, scoring twice in the opening 11 minutes to put the Pioneers in an early hole. Despite outshooting Ramapo, the Pioneers could not find the back of the net until the 6:50 mark of the first half when senior JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) found Lizardo with a cross into the box and the junior finished it off with a header past Sprague to cut the deficit in half. Adams made it a new game heading into the second half when he collected a shot from freshman Christopher Fuentes (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and deposited the rebound to level the scoring at 2-2 at the halftime break.

It was Ramapo pushing the issue to begin the second half just as they did in the first, taking the lead in the 51st minute on a goal from Edward Franzoni to retake the lead 3-2. Just two minutes later WP had the response however, when Allen netted his seventh goal of the season to even the scoring for the final time. The Pioneers created chances late but, including Gonzales shot from 20 yards out with 27 minutes remaining but a great diving stop by Sprague kept the score level and the teams remained that way through the end of regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Adams buried his fifth goal of the season to give the Pioneers the win and help them improve to 2-1 in conference play and earn three points in the conference standings.

The Pioneers return home for their next contest on Saturday, September 30 when they play host to New Jersey City with kickoff scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
