WAYNE, N.J. – Two first half goals helped set the tone of the match for William Paterson (9-2-0, 3-1-0 NJAC) as the Pioneers took down New Jersey City, (4-4-2, 0-3-1 NJAC) 3-1 inside Pioneer Soccer Park.
Senior
JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech), and sophomores
Kyle Adams (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) and
Cameron Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./Saint John Vianney) all scored for the Pioneers in the win, while sophomore
Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) and junior
Brandon Harley (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) each tallied an assist. Senior
Tim Morris (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) earned his second win of the week, making four saves to earn the win.
The Pioneers applied heavy pressure to the Gothic Knights the entire first half, breaking through for two goals in the opening 45 minutes. Junior defender
Zach Perez (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prep) pushed upfield twice in the opening ten minutes and created space for shots on goal but was turned away both times by NJCU keeper Eric Lopes Silva. In the 23rd minute, the Pioneers were taken down in the penalty area to set up Gonzales who buried the ensuing penalty kick just under the bar in the top left corner to put WP on top 1-0. 13 minutes later the Pioneers set up another opportunity, sending a ball into the box and eventually coming loose to Adams who deposited his fourth goal of the season to double the advantage before halftime. Adams appeared to have struck again moments later, but the goal was overturned due to an offsides call on the play and the Pioneers took the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Gothic Knights came out with a new intensity, pressuring the Pioneers for the first time and eventually drew a penalty kick of their own in the 48th minute. Ron Jones stepped up to the spot and converted for New Jersey City who cut the deficit in half with the score. Back and forth action ensued for the next 25 minutes before the Pioneers began to take control once again. In the 82nd minute, WP put the game out of reach for good when Harley found Allen with a long ball from beyond midfield, and Allen touched the bouncing ball past a charging keeper and inside the right post for the final tally of the contest, giving the Pioneers the 3-1 victory.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, October 4 when they travel to DeSales University for a non-conference matchup with the Bulldogs beginning at 4:00 p.m.
