WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (8-5, 1-3 NJAC) made it nine wins in a row against New Jersey City (6-6, 1-3 NJAC) with a 3-0 victory Tuesday evening inside the Recreation Center.
Two players reached double-digit kills in the win, with junior
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and sophomore
Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) putting down ten apiece. Junior
Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had an excellent night serving with four aces and also led the way defensively with eight digs. Freshman
Dakota Apicella (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) also had a strong night with eight digs, three kills, and a service ace.
The Pioneers took control from the very start, jumping out to a 10-1 lead behind two kills from Toman and two service aces from Caruso. After the Gothic Knights rallied to make it 14-8, the Pioneers stepped on the gas pedal and ran away with the set, using kills by Griffith and Toman and a Gothic Knight attack error to take the frame 25-12.
It was a much tighter battle in the middle stanza, with the Gothic Knights leading 20-17 late. Kills from juniors
Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and
Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) helped spark a four-point run for the Pioneers to give them a 21-10 lead. After a service error gave the serve back to New Jersey City, Lembo and Griffith put down kills and two errors by the Gothic Knights gave the Pioneers the 25-21 win.
WP took over once again in the final set, leading by as many as 14 points at the 21-7 mark of the set. Apicella put down a thunderous kill to make it match point and an eventual attacking error by New Jersey City gave the Pioneers the 25-14 set win and a 3-0 sweep in the match.
With their first conference win under their belt, the Pioneers will look to make it four in a row when they host The College of Saint Elizabeth on Thursday, September 28 inside the Recreation Center with first serve slated for 7:00 p.m.
