STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Pioneers (7-5) made quick work of Staten Island (2-8) and Brooklyn (7-5) Saturday, earning two 3-0 wins on the day.
Junior

Match One – WP 3, Brooklyn 0
The Pioneers took advantage of poor hitting by the Bulldogs in their opening match, recording less points than Brooklyn despite the 3-0 win. In the opening stanza, the Pioneers looked to be in complete control, leading 22-10 late in the set before the Bulldogs came storming out of a timeout with 13 of the next 15 points to trail just 24-23. A Lembo kill finally halted the run and helped the Pioneers survive the furious rally to take the opening frame and used the momentum to cruise through the second set 25-16.
The third set was another evenly matched battle, with WP finally breaking away for a five-point edge late. Leading 23-18, the Bulldogs took three consecutive points to pull within two, but Phillips and Griffith put down kills to close out the match.
Match Two – WP 3, CSI 0
William Paterson showed their offensive strength in their second matchup of the day, hitting .343 as a team and holding a 56-22 advantage in points over the Dolphins. Griffith led the attack with a .407 hitting percentage and 14 kills.
The Pioneers cruised through each set against the Dolphins, taking the match with 25-9, 25-11, and 25-13 wins to sweep both matches on the day.
WP returns to action on September 26 when they host New Jersey City in NJAC play beginning at 7:00 p.m.
