WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson University volleyball team started their 2017 season with a bang, taking down Lehman College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the William Paterson Recreation Center.
The Pioneers (1-0, 0-0 NJAC) allowed just 17 points in the match, while recording 14 service aces, and hitting .360 as a team offensively. Sophomore
Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) led the attack with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Juniors
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and
Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) also made big contributions, with Griffith recording eight kills and five service aces on the afternoon and Lembo adding five service aces as well. Junior setter
Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) did an excellent job directing the offense, compiling 19 assists on the day.
William Paterson set the tone for the match in the first set, starting the match with 18 unanswered points. After Lehman got on the board, the Pioneers rallied off seven more points to take the opening stanza 25-1. Lehman (0-1, 0-0 CUNYAC) kept things interesting in the second set, recording three consecutive points midway through the set, making it 12-6, but the Pioneers responded in a big way with seven unanswered points behind four kills by Griffith to take set two, 25-11.
It was all Pioneers once again in the final set, as William Paterson used runs of nine and seven points to pull away and take the final set 25-6 to earn their first victory of the season.
The team returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Baruch to take on the Bearcats in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m
