NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (2-0) continued their hot start to the season, taking down Baruch (1-4) for their second consecutive 3-0 victory Tuesday evening.
Sophomore
Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) picked up right where she left off Saturday, leading the Pioneers offensive attack once again with 17 kills on 23 attempts for an outstanding .739 hitting percentage. Fellow junior
Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) also had a big night in the middle of the front line, putting down 10 kills on 15 attempts while also adding one solo block and three block assists.
After falling behind 3-1 in the opening set, the Pioneers rattled off five straight points to take a 6-3 lead. Baruch got within two points on several occasions during the set, but the Pioneers would not relinquish the lead, capping off the set with kills from juniors
Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional).
After holding a small advantage for the opening 10 points of the second set, Baruch made it 11-9 behind a kill by Stella Chung, but the Pioneers rallied with a 14-3 run to take set two in convincing fashion, 25-12.
The Bearcats showed no quit entering the third set trailing 2-0 in the match, but the Pioneers attack was one again too much to handle, as the Pioneers registered 13 kills and one ace in the final stanza to hold off Baruch 25-19 and improve to 2-0 on the season.
The team will be back in action Thursday as they look to remain unbeaten on the season when they travel to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Thursday for a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
