WAYNE, N.J. – Four players finished in double figures and the William Paterson men's basketball team (4-6) outlasted St. Joseph's-Long Island (2-7) in non-conference action by an 81-78 final in overtime Dec. 13.
Senior
Dapo Badmos (Toronto, Canada/The Kiski School) led the scoring efforts for WP with 18 points on 7-of-10 (.700) shooting. Sophomore
Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) chipped in 16 points, including three triples, while freshmen
Henry Voorhees (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Domenic Mignone netted 12 points apiece in the win. The Golden Eagles were led by Trey Kinard who scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 (.466) shooting from the field and a 6-of-11 (.545) effort from beyond the arc.
Trailing by two (70-68) with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, Badmos knocked down a 16-foot jumper to level the scoring and force the extra period. Badmos opened the scoring in overtime with a pair of free throws just 34 seconds into the stanza to give WP the lead, 72-70. After the teams traded buckets to a 74-74 score midway through the period, Mignone hit two free throws to give the Orange and Black a lead that they would not relinquish. The Golden Eagles had a look with less than 10 seconds remaining, but Jarred Marrow's three-pointer came up short and WP held on for the 81-78 victory.
The contest was the final home contest of the calendar year for WP, as the team rounds out 2017 with two road matchups, the first of which will take place on Monday, Dec. 18, at York (N.Y.) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
