Volleyball Sweeps Home Tri-Match with 3-0 Victories Over York and Maritime

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (11-7) made quick work of its opponents Saturday afternoon, completing a clean sweep with 3-0 victories over both Maritime College (8-8) and York (N.Y.) College (1-17) at home.

Match One (WP 3, York (N.Y.) 0)
It was all William Paterson in the opening match, as the Pioneers rolled past the Cardinals in straight sets. WP came out on fire and took complete control early on, taking the opening set 25-0. From there, the Pioneers continued to cruise behind a total team effort, finishing off the match with 25-4 and 25-7 set wins.

Junior Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) led the Pioneers with 10 aces, 14 digs, and seven kills in the match. Fellow junior Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) added six service aces in one set of action, while classmate Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) put down eight kills in the win.

Match Two (WP 3, Maritime 0)
Another three set victory helped the Pioneers make it two wins on the home court Saturday. It was a tougher test in the opening set however, holding off the Privateers throughout the set before Caruso and Griffith tallied kills to close out the frame 25-19.

From there the Pioneers controlled the momentum the rest of the way, taking set two 25-15 and closing out the match with a 25-16 victory in the final stanza. The Pioneers held huge 8-0 advantage in blocks during the match and also held a slight edge in aces, 7-5. Sophomore Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) tied with Griffith for the team lead with nine kills, while Caruso finished with a double-double behind 27 assists and 10 digs.

The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, October 10 when they travel to Centenary University to take on the Cyclones beginning at 7:00 p.m.
