Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 20-9 loss to visiting Rowan (5-2, 3-1 NJAC) Oct. 26.

Senior quarterback Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton), a member of the 2012 All-NJAC Team Honorable Mention, is 189-for-307 for 2,206 yards (275.8 yards/game; second in league, 22nd in Division III), completing 17 touchdown passes to eight different teammates while running for three scores himself. His 279.9 yards of total offense per game rate second in the conference and 36th nationally, while his 23.63 completions per game rank 17th in Division III. The Sept. 8 and Sept. 29 NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, he is WP's career leader in completions (555), attempts (938), yardage (6,275) and touchdowns (40).

Sophomore Matt Deiana (Somers, N.Y./Somers) paces the ground game with 66 carries for 293 yards and a touchdown. Classmate Darius Kersey (Dover, N.J./Dover) has rushed 53 times for 199 yards and four scores, and has caught 21 passes for 332 yards and five TDs.

Senior wide receiver Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) is the Pioneers' leader in receptions (38) and yardage (549; 68.6 per game, third in NJAC), finding the end zone three times. Senior wide receiver/punter Julian Frazier (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) has hauled in 27 passes for 274 yards and four scores, while senior tight end Brian Winfield (Newton, N.J./Newton) has caught 26 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown.

Senior linebacker David Zurla (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) leads the Pioneers with 66 tackles (31 solo, 5.0 TFL) and 3.0 sacks. He ranks ninth in the NJAC with 8.2 stops per contest. Junior defensive back Elijah DeGuzman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) has collected 59 stops (32 solo, 4.5 TFL), forced two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown, and junior linebacker Ben Allen (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City) has made 58 tackles (32 solo, 3.0 sacks), 11.0 tackles for a loss (1.38 per game, third in league), forced a fumble and blocked a PAT. Junior defensive lineman Pat Thomas (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) has tallied 52 stops (24 solo, 8.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks) and is eighth in the conference with 1.06 tackles for a loss per game.

Frazier, the Sept. 8 and Sept. 22 NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, has punted 47 times for an average of 42.7 yards (first in NJAC, third in Division III).

Junior placekicker Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls), an honorable-mention all-NJAC selection in 2011, is 28-for-29 on PATs and 5-for-8 on field-goal attempts this fall.

The Oct. 6 NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, freshman Jerome Alexander (Montclair, N.J./Glen Ridge) has returned 13 kickoffs for an average of 33.1 yards (first in league, 10th nationally), including one for a 91-yard touchdown.

William Paterson returned five offensive starters and four defensive starters from a 2012 team that finished 5-5 overall and 2-5 in NJAC play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back 49 letterwinners and two all-conference selections, were predicted to finish sixth in the 2013 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
