Five Pioneers Named to NJCBA All-State Team

Gibbons, Derner, Montanile Earn First-Team Honors

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Five William Paterson Baseball players were selected to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State Team on May 9.

Senior first baseman Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic), senior designated hitter Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional), and junior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) earned first-team all-state honors.  Sophomore left-handed pitcher Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) was a second-team honoree, and freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) was a member of the All-Rookie Team.

A first-team All-NJAC honoree this spring, Montanile made the move from the outfield to first base this spring, currently leading WP with three triples and ranking second with a .377 batting average, 61 hits, 41 runs scored and 48 RBI while adding 13 doubles, two home runs, a .531 slugging percentage, .432 on-base percentage and .976 fielding percentage.  A second-team all-NJAC selection 2010, he ranks second in RBI (26th in Division III) and RBI/game (1.20, 35th nationally), fourth in hits and third in hits/game (1.53), fourth in runs scored and runs/game (1.03), tied for fourth in triples, fifth in average, tied for fifth in triples/game (0.08), tied for seventh in doubles, seventh in total bases (86) and seventh in doubles/game (0.33) in the league statistics, and he also rates 17th in Division III in toughest to strikeout.

A 2012 All-NJAC Second Team member and 2011 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State Second Team, Derner is the conference leader in slugging percentage (.804, seventh nationally), on-base percentage (.527, 15th in Division III), RBI (62, first nationally), home runs (13, second in Division III), total bases (115, sixth nationally), RBI/game (1.48, second nationally) and homers/game (0.31, 10th in Division III), ranking second in walks (30, 19th in Division III),.  A two-time member of the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week (April 2, April 9) and the March 26 NJCBA and NJAC Player of the Week, Derner has added a .413 batting average (third in league), 15 doubles (fourth in NJAC), 40 runs scored (tied-fifth in conference), four sacrifice flies (tied-fifth in league) and 59 hits (tied-sixth in NJAC) this spring.  He also ranks in the conference stats in walks/game (0.71, fifth), doubles/game (0.36, fourth), runs/game (0.95, seventh) and hits/game (1.40, tied-eighth) while starting in all but one game this season.

A Second-Team All-NJAC selection this spring, Gibbons has started in 40 of 42 games in his first season as a Pioneer after transferring from Kean.  He leads the NJAC in doubles (23, third in Division III) and doubles/game (0.55, fifth nationally) and ranks second in runs scored (52, 18th in Division III), tied-second in total bases (98, 43rd nationally) and second in runs/game (1.24, 33rd in Division III), third in slugging percentage (.616), fifth in stolen bases (17), tied for sixth in hits (59), seventh in batting average (.371), sixth in steals/game (0.40) and tied for fourth in walks (27), seventh in on-base percentage (.472), tied for seventh in home runs (four), tied-eighth in hits/game (1.40), eighth in homers/game (0.10), tied for ninth in triples (two), ninth in walks/game (0.64) and tied for 10th in RBI (33).

An honorable mention all-conference honoree and a 2011 NJCBA Division II/III All-Rookie Team selection, Jensen is 7-2 (tied third in NJAC in wins) with a 2.70 earned-run average this season.  He has started in nine of 12 appearances, posting 45 strikeouts and 28 walks in 63.1 innings.

Monaghan posted a 6-0 record (tied for fifth in NJAC standings) with a 3.47 ERA as a rookie.  He started in seven games, making eight appearances, tossing 36.1 innings, striking out 15, and walking 24.
