Sixth-Seeded Baseball Faces Top-Seeded No. 5/5 Rowan for NJAC Tournament Title

WAYNE, N.J. – The sixth-seeded William Paterson baseball team (17-22, 7-11 NJAC) begins a best-of-three New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament championship series at No. 5/5 Rowan (30-5, 15-3 NJAC) Saturday, May 2, at 11:30 a.m. in Glassboro, N.J.

  • The winner of the matchup between William Paterson and No. 5/5 Rowan will be crowned the NJAC Tournament champion and will receive an automatic bid to the 2026 NCAA Tournament. 
 
WP IN THE NJAC TOURNAMENT
  • WP is making its 37th appearance in the NJAC Tournament (1959, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), and its 13th trip under the tutelage of 19th-year head coach Mike Lauterhahn.
  • The Pioneers are looking for their 14th NJAC Tournament title (1959, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2022)

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
  • William Paterson played to a 15-22 overall record and 7-11 mark in conference play during the regular season, earning the sixth seed in the NJAC Tournament. 
  • The Pioneers opened the NJAC Tournament with a 3-2 upset win at No. 12/12 Kean in 11 innings on April 28 during the quarterfinal round before knocking off No. 13/15 Montclair State, 9-2, on the road in the semifinals April 30.  
  • Junior Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) was named to the All-NJAC Second Team and sets the tone from the leadoff spot, owning a team-best .414 batting average, .552 on-base percentage, 60 hits, 52 runs scored and a conference-high 43 walks.
  • Junior Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was a first-team all-conference honoree and has compiled a .513 slugging percentage and .351 batting average with 54 hits, 22 runs scored and team-highs in doubles (13), home runs (4) and RBI (42). 
  • Freshman Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical) has put together a rookie campaign that features a .381 batting average, .459 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage with 51 hits, seven doubles, three home runs, 37 RBI and 24 runs scored. He delivered the game-winning hit during the win against the Cougars in the quarterfinals and recorded four hits and five RBI versus the Red Hawks in the semifinals.
  • On the mound, the all-conference selection, junior Jose Marte (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) leads the starting rotation with a 2.75 ERA and 4-1 record with 35 punchouts across 59.0 innings pitched.   

SCOUTING THE PROFS
  • Rowan went 30-5 overall and 15-3 in NJAC action to earn the top seed in the conference tournament.
  • The Profs are 15-1 at home this season, including a 13-4 victory over Rutgers-Camden April 30 in the NJAC Tournament semifinals.
  • Junior Brayden Davis, the NJAC's Bill Dioguardi Player of the Year, carries a .403 batting average, .457 on-base percentage and .752 slugging percentage with 60 hits, 15 doubles, 11 home runs, 62 RBI, 42 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
  • Sophomore pitcher Austin Kreyenhagen has a 2.86 ERA and is 5-1 in eight starts, totaling 32 strikeouts in 50.1 innings of work.
 
EARLIER THIS SEASON
  • The Pioneers and Profs closed out the regular season April 26 with a pair of tightly contested games at Jeff Albies Field. Rowan earned a 1-0 victory in game one and secured an 8-6 win in 10 innings in game two.
