Mike Lauterhahn was named the 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Coach of the Year, leading a list of five Pioneer honorees announced May 2.
Senior first baseman
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) earned a spot on the All-NJAC First Team. Senior designated hitter
Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) and junior outfielder
Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) were second-team designees, and sophomore left-handed pitcher
Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) was an honorable-mention honoree.
Selected to finish seventh in the NJAC preseason coaches' poll, Lauterhahn guided the Pioneers to a 29-11 regular-season record while placing fourth in the NJAC conference race with an 11-7 league mark. In five seasons at the helm of the WP program, Lauterhahn has produced an overall career collegiate coaching record of 112-85, including his 100th victory during a 7-2 win at New Jersey City April 5.
Montanile made the move from the outfield to first base this spring, currently leading WP with three triples and ranking second with a .384 batting average, 61 hits, 41 runs scored and 48 RBI while adding 13 doubles, two home runs, a .541 slugging percentage, .436 on-base percentage and .975 fielding percentage. A second-team all-NJAC selection 2010, he ranks second in RBI (19th in Division III) and RBI/game (1.23, 30th nationally), third in hits (48th in Division III) and hits/game (1.56), fourth in runs scored and runs/game (1.05), tied for fourth in triples, fifth in average, tied for fifth in triples/game (0.08), tied for sixth in doubles, seventh in total bases (86) and tied for seventh in doubles/game (0.33) in the league statistics, and he also rates 21st in Division III in toughest to strikeout.
A member of the 2011 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State Second Team, Derner is the conference leader in slugging percentage (.820, fifth nationally), on-base percentage (.533, 12th in Division III), RBI (62, first nationally), home runs (13, second in Division III), total bases (114, fifth nationally), walks (30, 12th in Division III), RBI/game (1.51, third nationally) and homers/game (0.32, seventh in Division III). A two-time member of the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week (April 2, April 9) and the March 26 NJCBA and NJAC Player of the Week, Derner has added a .417 batting average (third in league, 44th in Division III), 15 doubles (fourth in NJAC), 40 runs scored (tied-fifth in conference), four sacrifice flies (tied-fifth in league) and 58 hits (eighth in NJAC) this spring. He also ranks in the conference stats in walks/game (0.73, third; 46th nationally), doubles/game (0.37, fourth), runs/game (0.98, tied-fifth) and hits/game (1.41, ninth) while starting in all but one game this season.
Gibbons has started in 39 of 41 games in his first season as a Pioneer after transferring from Kean. He leads the NJAC in doubles (23, third in Division III) and doubles/game (0.56, fourth nationally) and ranks tied for first in runs scored (52, seventh in Division III), second in total bases (98, 25th nationally) and runs/game (1.27, 21st in Division III), third in slugging percentage (.628), fifth in stolen bases (17), tied for fifth in hits (59), sixth in batting average (.378), steals/game (0.41) and walks (26, 48th nationally), seventh in on-base percentage (.476), tied for seventh in home runs (four) and hits/game (1.44), eighth in homers/game (0.10), tied for eighth in triples (two), ninth in walks/game (0.63) and tied for 10th in RBI (33).
Selected to the 2011 NJCBA Division II/III All-Rookie Team, Jensen is 7-1 with a 2.72 earned-run average this season. He has started in eight of 11 appearances, posting 42 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56.1 innings to tie for second in the NJAC and 42nd in Division III in victories.
