WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Mike Arecchi (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI and five runs scored, blasting two home runs, as the William Paterson baseball team (13-4) earned a 31-17, seven-inning victory against John Jay (4-19), March 28 at Jeff Albies Field.

William Paterson quickly built an early lead, started by junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) reaching on an error, and stole second.  Sophomore A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) followed with a bunt single, and advanced on a throwing error that allowed Gibbons to score.  Senior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) walked, and an Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) double to right-center plated Flores.  Back-to-back walks by senior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) allowed Montanile to trot home.  Senior shortstop Anthony Dorio's (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrifice fly to center scored Derner.  Sophomore Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) rolled a ground ball to the right-side to allow Somers to score.  Gibbons second at-bat in the inning resulted in a double to left-center, which plated Arecchi and Lauer, who both had previously reached on walks, to make the score 7-0 at the end of one inning.

A double by Brian McKenna led off the Bloodhound second inning, followed by an Eddie Montanez single that allowed a run to score.  The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the frame as Dorio's single down the left-field line allowed two runs to come home, stretching the lead, 9-1.

John Jay's Yahnny Arias singled to lead off the third, and a sacrifice bunt by Ronald Barillas moved Arias into scoring position.  A single by Nestor Amarante put runners at the corners, and McKenna's sacrifice fly plated a run for the Bloodhounds.  Back-to-back homers by Derner and Somers highlighted a four-run bottom of the third for the Pioneers, making the score 13-2.

WP tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, with three of the four hits being for extra-bases, including a left-center home run by Arecchi. Stringing together multiple base hits and two walks allowed John Jay to score six runs in the top of the fifth, to cut the score to 16-8.

The Pioneers responded by putting up a 10-run fifth inning.  Arecchi blasted his second home run of the day, while Lauer picked up his first career home run on a three-run blast.  Junior Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) picked up his first hits as a Pioneer, with a single and triple to center field in the inning.

John Jay fought back by putting together a nine-run sixth frame.  Five different batters slugged hits for the Bloodhounds, including catcher Billy Morans's two-RBI single, to lessen the deficit, 26-17.  WP added five runs in its half of the inning, including a two-RBI double to left-center by Arecchi, and a two-RBI triple by Flores.

Freshman Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) picked up his second win of the year tossing 4.0 innings, surrendering two earned runs on four hits.  Sophomore Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), senior Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) and sophomore Matt Serra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) all tossed 1.0 inning in relief for the Pioneers.

Corry Harper received the loss for John Jay, allowing five runs (three earned) to start the game.  Five different pitchers finished the game for the Bloodhounds, allowing 24 hits in 6.0 relief innings.  Moran was 2-for-2 with two RBI off the bench, and Pedro Acosta was 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.

Montanile was 4-for-5 with a game-high five RBI, and 3 runs scored.  Flores went 5-for-6 with four RBI and five runs scored.  Arecchi picked up a career-high four RBI, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two home runs and five runs scored.
