Baseball Rolls to 20-5 Home Victory Against Stevens

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (5-2) crossed the plate during all eight innings to earn a 20-5 home baseball victory March 9 against Stevens (6-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers touched home twice during their first at-bat. Junior designated hitter Devin Daproza (Englewood, N.J./Leonia) had a chopper back to the mound for a leadoff infield single, senior shortstop Dylan Santos (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) was hit by a pitch, and both junior left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and senior second baseman Angel Colon (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) followed with RBI-singles, making it a 2-0 game.
  • WP added three more to its tally in the second. Senior catcher Eliot Germanson (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) and sophomore center fielder Sean Lauterhahn (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) were hit by pitches, and later came around to score on a Daproza base hit to right center and a Santos groundout. A wild pitch allowed Daproza to scamper home, extending the lead to 5-0.
  • A two-run homer put the Ducks on the scoreboard during the top half of the third inning, 5-2.
  • William Paterson responded with three more runs during its next opportunity. Junior first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) started things off with a double down the left-field line, Colon walked and senior right fielder Steven Peralta (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Technical) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Germanson, who drove in all three with a double into the right-center gap.
  • Kobylakiewicz's second homer of the season found the netting above the fence in left to open the home half of the fourth. Bases on balls issued to Colon, Peralta, Germanson and Daproza forced across one runner, and Santos plated three more with a double to right center, pushing the lead to 13-2.
  • Sophomore pinch hitter Jesse Bash (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) drove in Kobylakiewicz, who reached via a leadoff walk, with an RBI-groundout for a 14-2 margin after five innings.
  • Stevens took advantage of a base hit, two walks, a groundout and a wild pitch to touch home twice in the top of the sixth.
  • Santos drew a one-out base on balls and Colon delivered him home three batters later with a single to center for a 15-4 edge.
  • A pair of walks, a groundout and a sacrifice fly scored one Duck during the top half of the seventh inning.
  • Junior designated hitter Mike Peia (Mount Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) drew a two-out walk in the seventh, freshman shortstop Christian Pelaez (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) doubled to right center, freshman left fielder Matt Caruso (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Technical) had a run-scoring infield single, freshman pinch hitter Sean Bauer (Butler, N.J./Butler) was hit by a pitch, and Colon forced across a run with a base on balls for two more Pioneer runs.
  • During the home half of the eighth, senior third baseman Julian Pinto (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) hit a one-out double, Lauterhahn walked and Peia drilled a three-run homer to left to push the lead to 20-5.
