Baseball Drops Spring Break Opener to Franklin and Marshall

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The William Paterson baseball team (5-3) dropped a 14-1 seven-inning decision to Franklin and Marshall (7-3) March 14 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Diplomats seized a 1-0 first-inning lead with a double, wild pitch and single.
  • The Pioneers knotted the score at 1-1 during their first at-bat when junior left fielder Stephen Kubis (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) drew a two-out walk, junior first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) singled up the middle and Kubis scored on a wild pitch.
  • A walk, single and groundout plated one run for F&M in the third, and the Diplomats opened up a 7-1 lead during the top half of the fifth inning thanks to a hit by pitch, three base hits, a walk and a double.
  • Franklin and Marshall pushed it a 10-1 margin with three scores in the sixth, then added four more in the seventh with a pair of two-run singles.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Kobylakiewicz finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Junior Rob Nathan (Lords Valley, Pa./Vernon Twp.) tossed the first 4.1 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks while collecting four strikeouts (1-3).
  • Sophomore Jayden Villalta (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) worked 0.2 inning, giving up two hits and one run. Junior Jacob Herrera (Bayonne, N.J./St. Mary) allowed one hit and three runs (one earned) with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of action.
  • Senior Chris Quartuccio (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) recorded four runs, two hits and two walks surrendered during 0.1 inning on the mound, while freshman Pete Hammerle (Frankford, N.J./Lakeland Regional) recorded one of the final two outs via strikeout.
