WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-6-1) swept a seven-inning doubleheader against visiting Stevens (2-10), 5-2 and 3-0, March 26. Freshman third baseman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) finished a combined 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, while the Pioneers received a pair of strong starts on the hill from sophomore J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) and freshman Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford).

GAME ONE
A two-out, two-run single to left field by Flores gave the Pioneers an early two-run advantage in the second inning. A single, sacrifice and groundout advanced Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) to third base, and he later scored on a wild pitch to hand William Paterson a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, junior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) lifted a fly ball to center field, plating Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.), who had reached on a bunt single, for a 4-0 advantage after four.

The Ducks struck back in the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back two-out walks of Dan Allen and Denis Ackermann. A single by Matt Glassman plated Allen and cut the lead to 4-1. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Chris Tucci's sacrifice fly to center field allowed Tyler Courter to score the Duck's second run of the game, and cut the lead to 4-2.

Scott Hansen's (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) single, followed by back-to-back bunts, started the Pioneer offense once again in the bottom of the sixth inning. A suicide squeeze laid perfectly down the third base line by Dorio allowed Hansen to score, giving the Pioneers a 5-2 edge.

Flores finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs-batted-in, while Derner went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

J.J. Moran tossed 5.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs and striking out seven (1-1). Junior Bryce Warden (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) threw 1.2 hitless innings in relief, striking out three to pick up the save.

Glassman led the Ducks at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort. Kevin Matthews (2-2) pitched 5.2 innings, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs for Stevens.

GAME TWO
Derner's ground ball in the bottom of the first inning plated Flores, who had reached on a leadoff walk, giving the Pioneers a quick 1-0 lead. A triple to left-center field by Mike Moran led to another run for William Paterson after he scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, handing the Pioneers a 2-0 edge.

Singles by senior Zak Rose (Nutley, N.J./St. Mary Rutherford) and Flores pushed another run across for the Pioneers in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 3-0 lead.

The Ducks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, thanks in part to a pair of WP errors, but junior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) entered the game with two outs and induced an infield popup to end the contest.

Nine different hitters accounted for William Paterson's nine hits. Jensen improved to 2-1 after throwing 6.2 innings, scattering six hits and striking out four. Coral recorded his second save of the season.

Corey Linden was 2-for-3 and Tom Phillips went 2-for-4 for Stevens. Tyler Courter (2-3) started game two for the Ducks, tossing 5.0 innings, surrendering nine hits and three runs. Vincent Vinci threw 1.0 hitless innings, striking out a pair of Pioneers.

William Paterson will host the Utica Pioneers in a seven-inning doubleheader Sunday, March 27, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
