Baseball Can't Hold Slim Lead Late, Loses 8-4

Pioneers Can't Hold Off Concordia (Ill.)

MESA, ARIZ. – The William Paterson baseball team (0-3-1) held a 4-3 lead after six innings, but Concordia, Ill. (7-2) crossed the plate five times during the last three frames for an 8-4 win at the Greater Phoenix Invitational March 13.

The Pioneers struck first when Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) singled in juniors Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) in the bottom of the first, but Concordia took and 3-2 lead in the third, thanks to three singles, a RBI-groundout and a bases-loaded walk. William Paterson tied things up during the home half of the inning after Dorio led off with a single, stole second and scored via a Hansen base hit through the left side of the infield.

Junior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) gave WP a 4-3 edge with his RBI-single to center field, plating Montanile from second base during the bottom of the sixth, but Concordia took the lead right back with two unearned, two-out runs in the top of the seventh. The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to seal the victory.

Dorio finished 4-for-5 and scored twice, while Hansen was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Freshman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) went 3-for-5 and Derner, Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Sophomore J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) started on the mound and surrendered three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings, walking nine and striking out two. Junior Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) took the loss (0-1), allowing three hits and three runs (one earned) in 2.2 innings. Sophomore James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) gave up one run in 0.0 inning, junior Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) tossed 0.1 scoreless inning, and sophomore Greg Baker (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson Regional) pitched the final 1.0 inning and surrendered one run and two hits.

William Paterson will take on Rockford at 9:30 a.m. MT and Western New England at 1:00 p.m. MT on Monday, March 14, at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
