Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore starter
Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) struck out eight while allowing three runs in 7.0 innings as William Paterson (13-7-1, 3-1 NJAC) defeated visiting Ramapo (7-10, 1-4 NJAC), 7-5, on April 8. The Pioneers swept the regular-season series from the Roadrunners, thanks to a 5-1 win in Mahwah April 1.
The Pioneers wasted little time, hanging five runs on the scoreboard during their second at-bat. After junior
Zac Rose (Nutley, N.J./St. Mary Rutherford) reached base on an one-out error by the Ramapo right fielder, sophomore
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) tripled down the right-field line, delivering the game's first run. After a groundout, senior
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) hit a single back up the middle to plate Montanile. Following a Laguerre stolen base, sophomore
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) hit a single that the Roadrunner left fielder over ran, getting past him and rolling to the fence. Dorio came all the way around and beat the throw to the plate, making it a 4-0 score. Senior
Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) laced a double down the right-field and sophomore
Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) followed with a triple to left, handing the Pioneers a 5-0 edge thanks to the five unearned runs.
Ramapo got one run back in the top of the third with a Mark Ruggiero triple and a Nicholas DiGirolamo sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded and one out during the fourth inning, the Pioneers tried to turn the double play, but the throw from second base was up the line, allowing Christian Spurr and Dan Moreno to trot home and make it a 5-3 score.
William Paterson extended its lead to 7-3 with a pair of scores during the sixth inning. Laguerre led off with a single, stole second and scored after a Dorio base hit. Lugo laid down a bunt that was mishandled by the Ramapo third baseman, a sacrifice and error to give WP runners on first and second. Somers was successful on his sacrifice attempt, advancing the runners, and after an intentional walk issued to senior
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) loaded the bases, junior
Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) hit a grounder that the second baseman could not handle, allowing Dorio to safely cross home plate.
The Roadrunners finished the scoring with two runs in the eighth via a Daniel Mauriello RBI-double and a Spurr run-scoring single.
Dorio was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Somers went 2-for-2 with a RBI-triple, Laguerre was 2-for-3 with a RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases, and Montanile went 2-for-4 while adding a triple, RBI and run. Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) gave up two runs and three hits, and junior
Brett Carroll (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) picked up his first save, tossing the final 2.0 innings and striking out three while surrendering two hits.
