WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (14-14-1, 4-6 NJAC) dropped a pair of games to visiting The College of New Jersey (15-13, 8-3 NJAC), 3-2 and 11-5, in a New Jersey College Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball doubleheader April 17 at Pioneer Baseball Park.

GAME ONE
The College of New Jersey jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held on for a one-run win during the day's opening contest.

TCNJ produced a pair of two-out runs to get things started in the top of the first, as back-to-back singles were followed by a double from sophomore James Ruzich to give the Lions the early advantage. Ruzich then made it a 3-0 score with his third-inning base hit to right field, plating Jason Zegarski from third base.

William Paterson struck back during the home half of the fifth inning, as the Pioneers pushed across a pair of runners. Sophomore Matt Norton (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and sprinted home thanks to an Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) single through the left side of the infield. Laguerre later stole second and advanced to third after a wild pitch, and the senior center fielder eventually crossed home plate after Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) blooped a base hit into shallow right field.

Lugo and sophomore Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers, while sophomore Mike Galeotafiore was 3-for-4 for the Lions. Ruzich finished 2-for-4 while driving in all three of TCNJ's runs.

Junior Connor Henderson improved to 6-0 on the mound, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings while striking out four Pioneers and walking one. Senior A.J. Adamczyk picked up his first save with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Junior Brett Carroll (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) pitched the complete game for the Pioneers (3-2), giving up 11 hits and one walk while registering five strikeouts.

GAME TWO
TCNJ finished off the sweep with an 11-5 victory, knocking around 14 hits, including six for extra bases. Senior Greg Spatz pitched the complete game (4-2), allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two Pioneers.

It was William Paterson's turn to score during the opening inning, crossing home plate three times. Dorio reached base after a leadoff throwing error by the Lions' shortstop, and after a groundout for the first out, senior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) doubled to right field to give WP runners on second and third. A lineout to short made it two outs, but sophomore Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to the hole on the left side, a base hit that plated Dorio for the game's first run. A wild pitch and a walk issued to Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) loaded the bases for sophomore Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.), who was hit by the second offering from Spatz, forcing across Guadango. Montanile then trotted home thanks to another free pass, this one drawn by freshman Mike Linskey (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII), for a 3-0 score.

TCNJ tied things up with three scores during the top of the second. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly off the bat by Ryan Anzelone scored the Lions' first run, and freshman Michael Murphy immediately followed with a two-run double, knotting the score at 3-3. However, Guadango gave the Pioneers the lead again with a home run, a solo blast to left-center, for a 4-3 score after two.

The Lions pulled ahead with three more runs in the third, as Galeotafiore doubled in Zegarski and Ruzich hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence. Galeotafiore then made it 8-4 with his line-drive home run to right field in the sixth, and a two-out error allowed Ed Zakrewski to touch home plate and create a 9-4 TCNJ lead during the top of the seventh.

After two walks and a groundout to start the top of the eighth inning, Nick Cifelli hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the Lions' 10th run of the game, and a Murphy grounder through the left side pushed TCNJ ahead, 11-4. William Paterson finished its day with a single score in the ninth when Somers crossed the plate after a Laguerre fielder's choice.

Galeotafiore was 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored, while Ruzich went 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs for TCNJ.

Guadango led the Pioneer offense with a 2-for-4 effort, scoring twice and collecting a RBI. Sophomore starter Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) tossed the first 6.0 innings (1-1), giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, while sophomore Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and three runs, two of them earned. Sophomore Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) accounted for the final 1.1 scoreless innings.

William Paterson will play a single game at Rutgers-Newark Thursday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m.
