Baseball Starts NJAC Play with 5-1 Win at Ramapo

Carroll Pitches Eight Strong Innings in Victory

MAHWAH, N.J. – Junior Brett Carroll (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) pitched eight strong innings of one-run baseball as William Paterson (10-6-1, 1-0 NJAC) began New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a 5-1 win at Ramapo (6-6, 0-1 NJAC) April 1.

Carroll (3-0) struck out nine and walked five while scattering four hits, including a Ramapo fourth-inning solo home run for the Roadrunners' lone score of the afternoon. Senior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while classmate Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) went 2-for-5 and senior Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) was 1-for-3, scored once and collected two RBI. Freshman Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) tossed the final 1.0 inning to help William Paterson earn its fifth straight victory.

Lugo started off the game by getting hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a groundout and later scored after a Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) RBI-single to left field. The Pioneers made it a 4-0 score with three more runs in the second after five base hits, including run-scoring singles off the bats of Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.), Lugo and Guadango. Lugo's sacrifice fly plated sophomore Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) to finish the scoring in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Michael Hansford was 2-for-3 for Ramapo, while sophomore Dan Moreno was the only Roadrunner to cross the plate after his home run. Senior Michael Murano fell to 3-1 after surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 6.0 innings.

The Pioneers will play a doubleheader at Richard Stockton Saturday, April 3, at 11:30 a.m.
