Baseball Hands Oneonta First Loss, 7-6 in 10 Innings

Lugo's Two-Out Single Gives Pioneers Walk-Off Win

Zac Rose helped ignite a 10th-inning rally with his two-out single against Oneonta.
Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Miguel Lugo's (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed William Paterson (6-6-1) to hand visiting Oneonta (11-1) its first loss of the season in a 7-6 final at Pioneer Baseball Park March 24.

After two straight outs to start the bottom of the 10th, junior Zac Rose (Nutley, N.J./St. Mary Rutherford) delivered a single to left, followed by a double to left-center by sophomore shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst). Lugo then lined an offering over the pitcher's head and into center field, plating Rose from third base for the game-winning run.

A Dan Randall solo home run gave Oneonta a first-inning lead, but the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the second when Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) led off the inning with a single through the right side. Franco would eventually score on a throwing error by the Red Dragons' second baseman, and a Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) single later scored senior Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.

Oneonta answered with two runs of its own in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Matthew Whelehan singled through the right side to start things off, and a Steve Gauck base hit scored Whelehan to knot the score at 2-2. Freshman Michael DeCarr's line drive down the right-field line scored sophomore Michael Center, who reached base on a fielder's choice, for a 3-2 edge.

William Paterson tied the game at 3-3 after a Franco double scored sophomore Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional), who reached base on a walk. However, a leadoff single in the fourth inning by Ivan Plata started another one-run frame for Oneonta. An error by the Pioneers' first baseman allowed Plata to advance to third base, and he later scored on a Whelehan groundout to second base, giving the Red Dragons a 4-3 lead.

The Pioneers led off the fifth inning with a Somers single, followed by a Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) base hit to left field. A sacrifice bunt by Franco moved Somers and Guadango into scoring position, and a two-out single by Laguerre scored both runners, handing the Pioneers a 5-4 edge.

Oneonta answered again with Plata and Kevin Knack sixth-inning singles. Another Whelehan base hit scored Plata, leveling the score at 5-5. After retiring two consecutive Red Dragons in the top of the seventh inning, a DeCarr single kept the inning alive, and a base hit by Bryan Marotta advanced DeCarr to third base. Plata's double to right field scored DeCarr, but a quick relay throw by Lugo prevented Marotta from crossing the plate, keeping it a 6-5 score.

The bottom of the eighth inning proved to be eventful as Pioneer Dorio reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out double by Lugo, again forging a tie score.

Lugo finished 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Franco went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in another. Dorio was 2-for-5 at the plate, and Somers went 1-for-3 while scoring twice.

William Paterson starter Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on 13 hits and striking out four Red Dragons. Reliever Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) was outstanding in relief, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings to improve to 2-0, surrendering one hit while registering three strikeouts.

Oneonta starting pitcher Jeffery Carter surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. Christopher Smith pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits, and Anthony Bates (1-1) gave up four hits and two runs in 2.2 innings.

Plata was 3-for-4 with a double for Oneonta, scoring twice, while Whelehan went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.

The Pioneers will visit Manhattanville Thursday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m.
