Box Score
DALLAS, PA. – Host Misericordia (6-5) twice converted on penalty corners to hand the William Paterson field hockey team (3-8) a 2-1 loss on Oct. 7.
Less than three minutes into the game, Amanda Blank played a corner and then got into the box in time to deflect Samantha Sorokas' shot past junior
Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North), putting the Cougars up 1-0 early.
Misericordia doubled its advantage seven and a half minutes later off another penalty corner. This time Kelsey DeBruyne took the pass from Blank and fed Sorokas, who ripped her shot straight in from the left side.
DeBruyne nearly scored from the same spot later in the half when her shot off a corner beat Trivett, but it was saved off the goal line by William Paterson's
Melissa Szeliga (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield).
A stingy Misericordia defense didn't allow the Pioneers a shot until the final 14 minutes, when Cougar goalie Haley Brandt saved a
Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) try.
A minute later, William Paterson cut the deficit in half. Sophomore
Danielle Meade(Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) took a pass from
Jaclyn Bertos (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) in front of Brandt and finished into the right side of the goal, making the score 2-1.
Brandt was making her first career start for Misericordia and had to make a nice kick save late to preserve the victory as the Cougars weathered a late Pioneer flurry.
William Paterson will play at Richard Stockton Saturday, Oct. 9, at 2:00 p.m.
