Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Junior Tyler Renner (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) threw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing William Paterson (19-14) to overcome a 5-1 deficit and rally for a 6-5 victory against John Jay (8-22) April 21.

John Jay secured a lead immediately with two runs scored during the Bloodhounds' first at-bat, as senior John Massoni and sophomore Jason Witten each hit RBI-singles. Senior Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) led off the home half of the first with an infield single to second base that was overthrown, allowing him to trot to second. He later moved to third on a long flyout and scored thanks to a passed ball, cutting the John Jay lead in half at 2-1.

The Bloodhounds answered with a three-run second, as junior Edwin Hernandez tripled in Steven Kendrick, James Podlucky drove in Hernandez with a single, and a Xavier Perez sacrifice fly plated Podlucky.

William Paterson got one run back with a Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) fourth-inning run-scoring double, and scored twice more during the bottom of the fifth thanks to back-to-back extra-base hits by J.D. Melendez (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) and Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), to make it a 5-4 game.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the day by crossing the plate twice during the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Fondacaro reached base after an error by the John Jay shortstop, and was lifted for pinch runner Kevin Ryan (Edison, N.J./Edison). Freshman Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) laced a triple to right-center to score Ryan, and after a WP groundout, classmate Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) singled through the left side of the infield, driving in Montanile and handing the Pioneers a 6-5 lead.

Dorio was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of triples, Franco went 2-for-4 and had a double, RBI and run scored, and Melendez hit a triple as part of a 1-for-3 effort. Sophomore Kyle Schlemm (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) started on the mound and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings. Renner improved to 2-1, giving up just three hits and a walk while registering five strikeouts. Freshman Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) picked up his first save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Massoni led John Jay at the plate, going 3-for-5 and driving in a run. Hernandez went 2-for-4, hit a triple and had a RBI and two runs scored. Senior Michael Colletta started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Junior Johan Abad took the loss in relief (2-3), surrendering three hits and two unearned runs in 3.0 innings on the mound.

William Paterson will play its final non-conference game of the regular season on Wednesday, April 22, at Drew at 3:30 p.m.
