Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Nine different players had hits as the William Paterson baseball team (10-8) earned a 13-10 victory at Union (3-6) March 13.

Sophomore Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) was 3-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Pioneers at the plate. Junior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 2-for-6 with a double and two runs-batted-in, and classmate Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) went 2-for-6 while hitting a double, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Senior John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) hit his team-best sixth home run of the year, a two-run, pinch-hit shot during the eighth inning.

After Union scored a single run during the bottom of the first inning, William Paterson sent 12 batters to the plate during the top of the second inning and knocked out six hits to score seven runs. Freshman J.D. Melendez (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) and Moran delivered RBI-singles, Lugo drove in three runs with a double, Guadango plated another run with a two-bagger, and sophomore Zak Rose (Nutley, N.J./St. Mary Rutherford) scampered home on an error, staking the Pioneers to the 7-1 advantage.

A solo home run for the Dutchmen made it a 7-2 score after two full innings, but Lugo scored due to an error and Guadango drove in senior Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) with a single through the right side, to make it a 9-2 contest.

The Dutchmen used a double, error, triple and passed ball to cut that lead back to four at 9-5 after three innings, and single runs during both the fourth and fifth frames pulled Union back to within striking distance at 9-7.

With the bases loaded and two outs during the top of the seventh, Moran singled to right field to plate Lugo and Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), giving William Paterson an 11-7 advantage. Those runs would turn out to be very valuable, as Union scored three runs of its own during the home half of the inning, for an 11-10 score.

Elia's two-out, pinch-hit homer pushed William Paterson's lead back to three runs at 13-10 during the eighth inning. The Pioneers then retired six of the Dutchmen's next seven batters, as freshman J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) recorded five strikeouts in securing the victory.

Starter Tyler Renner (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) improved to 1-1 with 4.0 innings of work, allowing 10 hits and six runs (four earned). Freshman Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) pitched 2.1 innings of middle relief and surrendered four runs on four hits, while Moran recorded his second save of the year with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Pioneers will return to Wayne to face RPI Wednesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m.
