Box Score
CHANDLER, ARIZ. – Junior
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, and senior
Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) allowed just one run and seven hits in nine innings of work, as William Paterson (3-1) earned a 6-1 victory against Brockport (1-2) at the Greater Phoenix Invitational March 14.
The Pioneers got on the board during their very first at-bat when senior first baseman
Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) singled home Laguerre, and William Paterson made it a 3-0 score in the top of the second inning thanks to a RBI-triple by freshman second baseman
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and a Laguerre run-scoring single down the left-field line.
Brockport scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third off a single back to the pitcher. Laguerre's round-tripper to left field pushed the Pioneers ahead 5-1 in the seventh inning, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Courter in the eighth finished the scoring.
VandeVrede struck out two hitters and walked one to improve to 2-0 this season. Dorio finished 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored, while freshman shortstop
Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) was 2-for-4 and Courter was 1-for-3 with two walks and a pair of RBI.
The Pioneers will take on Wheaton Sunday, March 15, at 1:30 p.m. PT at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
