Pioneers Earn 12-7 Victory at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-6) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, earning a 12-7 victory at Old Westbury (1-15) March 27.

Senior Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 2-for-2, and junior John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) was 2-for-3. Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren), Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic), Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) and James Gregory (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) each contributed two hits for the Pioneers.

Freshman Darren Ritchie (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) picked up the victory in his first career start (1-0), allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) in 4.0 innings. Classmate Paul Albanese (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) threw 4.0 innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and giving up four runs (one earned), and junior Mark Robbins (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) threw a perfect inning of relief.

William Paterson scored three runs during its first at-bat, thanks to a Perrone fielder's choice, and Elia and Scott Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) RBI-singles. Guadango plated a run with a double in the second, followed by a Perrone RBI-single and a Joyce run-scoring groundout.

Old Westbury scored a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Pioneers answered with four runs in the top of the sixth. Perrone and Joyce each drove in runs with singles, and Ganz scored two with another single.

William Paterson tacked on another run in the seventh, when Joyce singled in Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), for a 12-3 edge.

William Paterson will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Friday, March 28, hosting New Jersey City at 3:00 p.m.
