WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (8-6) pounded out 18 hits while holding the Red Dragons scoreless, cruising past SUNY Oneonta (7-6) for a 17-0 victory March 26 at Pioneer Baseball Park.
The Pioneers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) blasted a three-run home run to left field.
John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) and
Scott Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) each doubled for RBI, while
Vin Ganz (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored Fischer with a RBI-triple and
James Gregory (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) singled in Ganz, helping the Pioneers seize a 7-0 lead.
The Pioneers' scoring continued with three runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Fischer double, giving WP a 10-0 edge over the Red Dragons.
The fifth inning saw two more unanswered Pioneer runs when
Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) drove in Guadango and
Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) with a triple to left field.
The scoring was capped at 17-0 in the eighth inning with five unearned runs.
Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren) doubled to right field, bringing in three runs, while Guadango and Perrone each doubled for a RBI apiece.
William Paterson got five hits, including a home run, four runs and four RBI from Guadango. Perrone finished 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) took the win for the Pioneers (3-0), allowing only two hits in 3.0 innings.
Steve Schlitzer (West New York, N.J./Memorial) threw three innings of relief, while
Paul Albanese (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park),
Kyle Schlemm (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and
Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Lincoln Park) each added an inning to the shutout.
Ryan Cole suffered the loss for Oneonta State (2-1), giving up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings. Dan Randall had two of the Red Dragons' five hits, including a double.
Following a game at SUNY Old Westbury Thursday, March 27, at 3:00 p.m., William Paterson will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Friday, March 28, hosting New Jersey City at 3:00 p.m.
