Pioneers Cruise to 13-2 Victory against Southern Maine

MESA, Ariz. – William Paterson (6-5) used 17 hits, including six for extra bases, to cruise to a 13-2 victory against Southern Maine (0-1) March 20 at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.

The Huskies scored a run in the bottom of the first, but the Pioneers answered with nine straight scores to take control of the game. William Paterson scored three times in the second, tacked on four runs in the fourth, and two more in the sixth. Freshman Scott Fischer's (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) first career home run helped the Pioneers finish the scoring with a four-run effort in the eighth.

Junior John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) was 3-for-6 with two doubles, a pair of RBI and two runs scored, and Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Derek Koppinger (Columbia, N.J./North Warren) each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.

Sophomore Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) earned the victory (2-0), allowing two earned runs and 12 hits with two strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Junior Mark Robbins (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) threw a perfect ninth inning in relief.

William Paterson will finish play at the Greater Phoenix Invitational Friday, March 21, at 9:30 a.m. MT against Concordia.
