MAHWAH, N.J. – In the first round of the 2008 New Jersey Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, the third-seeded Roadrunners of Ramapo College (16-15) defeated the sixth- seeded Pioneers of William Paterson, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21), Nov. 4.
In game one, the Roadrunners hit a combined .250 led by rookie Kayla Anders with seven kills on 10 attempts and only one error (.600), taking the game, 25-21. Maura Burke, Kimberly Runge, and Allison DiAngelo each contributed two kills for Ramapo, while rookie setters Michelle Del Valle and Tiffany Fischer combined for 11 assists. Runge led the team's defense with five digs.
Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) led the Pioneers in game one with five kills, while
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) contributed four, combining for nine of the team's 14. Together the Pioneers hit 14-for-38 with seven errors (.184). Maher dished out seven assists and Helfrich led the defense with four digs.
The Roadrunners took a two game lead when they dropped the Pioneers 25-20 in the second game. Anders, Burke, Runge, and Tara Tielmann shared the offensive attack with two kills each, while Del Valle and Elizabeth Steck each recorded a team-high three digs. Helfrich took over the offensive attack with five kills and Maher contributed five assists.
Samantha Reed (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and Maher each recorded four digs.
Ramapo held a slight edge in game three but the Pioneers fought back to tie the game at 20-20, and then took the game 25-22. The Pioneers hit .300 in the game over Ramapo's .148. Helfrich recorded five digs and Maher contributed four while dishing out six assists. Helfrich and
Amanda Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) each recorded three digs. Anders led Ramapo with four kills and Runge contributed three. Del Valle led the way with six assists and Steck led the defense with three digs.
Anders put down nine kills in game four with only two hitting errors on 16 attempts, (.438), to lead the Roadrunners to the win with a 25-21 victory. The team recorded 19 total kills on 37 attempts with four errors (.405) while the Pioneers combined for only 10 kills on 31 attempts with four errors (.194). Fischer stepped up and dished out nine assists in the win while Michelle McKenna, Del Valle, and Steck each recorded four digs. Maher was the kill leader for the Pioneers with three.
On the night, Anders led Ramapo with 22 kills and Runge put down 10 of her own. Del Valle and Fischer recorded 23 and 22 assists, respectively, while the defense was held solid by Steck's team-high 15 digs. The Roadrunners recorded 51 kills, hitting .227 with 22 errors on 128 attempts.
For the Pioneers, Helfrich led the offensive attack with 16 kills and Maher and Reed added 13 and 10, respectively. Maher dished out 23 assists and added 12 digs for the triple-double, while Helfrich posted a team-high six total blocks. The team hit 49-of-132 with 25 errors (.182).
