Eleven-Run Fourth Carries WPU to 17-4 Victory

WAYNE , N.J. – Eleven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning carried the William Paterson baseball team (12-8-2) to a 17-4 victory against visiting FDU-Florham (11-8) April 10.

Senior Rick Pignatello's (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) triple, followed by a single from Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern), gave the Pioneers a 1-0 edge after the first inning. D.J. Hanna (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) tied the contest with a RBI single in the third, and Joey Santillo (Mt. Olive, N.J./Mt. Olive) scampered home on a passed ball in the fourth, giving the Devils a 2-1 advantage.

The Pioneers nearly batted around twice in the home half of the fourth, blasting eight hits to score 11 runs. Senior Ryan Brand (Monroe, N.J./Marlboro) plated two runs with a single, Pignatello knocked a bases-loaded triple to right-center to drive in three scores, and senior Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) drove in two more runs with a single down the right-field line.

Poppe came home on a throwing error in the fifth, and Pignatello drove in a run in the sixth with a groundout, pushing William Paterson ahead, 14-2. Matt Oliveto's (Union, N.J./Union Catholic) triple gave FDU-Florham two runs in the seventh, but WPU answered with three more scores in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a Dan Limone (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) single and a James Gregory (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) pinch-hit base knock.

Seven Pioneers had two hits each, led by Pignatello's 2-for-4 effort, four RBI, two runs scored and two triples. Reinertsen was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, two runs and a triple, while Jon Marzella (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Freshman Greg Stokes (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) started for the Pioneers on the mound, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing four hits and two runs (one earned). Steve VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) hurled 2.0 innings of shutout relief, followed by 2.0 innings from Reinertsen (four hits, two earned runs). Dan VandeVrede (Lincoln Park, N.J./Pequannock) recorded the final three outs for William Paterson.

William Paterson will host Rowan Thursday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m.
